Therapy for Children and Adolescents
Practical interventions in collaboration with the family to improve the child's well-being.
Therapy for children and adolescents
Therapy for children and adolescents is the therapy format we use to treat the problems of the youngest members of the household. Childhood difficulties are challenges that allow children and adolescents to put into action various tools and strategies that boost their personal development and growth. Sometimes, these difficulties and problems our children go through exceed their ability to respond, and we parents see with frustration that our child is unable to escape a situation that overwhelms them, constituting an important source of distress and hindering their personal development.
I work with several therapeutic approaches adapted to children and adolescents, with the aim of giving them the tools and strategies they need to overcome the difficulties they are going through, so they can make the most of one of the finest stages of life.
Who can go to child therapy?
Child therapy is indicated for all those children and adolescents who have problems relating to their peers, who present school or academic difficulties, who are suffering some kind of bullying from other classmates, who have behavioral problems at home, or who simply want help to overcome some difficulty.
How does therapy for children and adolescents work?
With children it is common to have to explain first what a psychotherapist does; I introduce myself as someone who helps people achieve the "things" they set out to do. My approach starts from the resources the child already has, in order to carry them over to the areas of life where they struggle most, creating a snowball effect in which the parents' role is fundamental. I avoid labels and diagnoses, so as not to feed self-fulfilling prophecies or Pygmalion effects that undermine change.
How do I know if my child needs psychological help?
Psychotherapy for children and adolescents has proven effective in treating problems relating to others, problems related to the academic environment, behavioral problems, and even when what is sought is help to address any other difficulty your child is going through.
Is it necessary for my child to see a psychologist?
I am not in favour of forcing a child to see a psychologist. If you think your child needs help, the best thing is to explain what a psychologist does and suggest a first trial session so they can see the advantages for themselves and feel motivated towards change. And although working directly with the child is usually ideal, when they are very young or refuse to come, therapy with the parents — whom I equip with the strategies and tools to handle the difficulties with their children — has also proven highly effective in reaching the therapeutic goals.
What problems are treated in therapy for children and adolescents?
In therapy for children and adolescents we address any problem your child may be going through, such as bullying, academic difficulties, self-esteem problems, life crises, behavioral problems, social skills problems and difficulties relating to others, problems related to the excessive use of electronic devices (tablet, computer or game console), fears, sleep problems, or problems arising from separations or divorces.
Shall we talk about your child?
The first call is with you, not with them. You tell me what is going on and I will say whether it makes sense to work with the child, with you, or with both.
